Dobbs Ferry Schools Foundation Fall 2009 Grant Cycle Summary

DISTRICT-WIDE GRANTS
Description   Cost
Three Cups of Tea/Pennies for Peace: A Community Read and Service Project.   $3,334
   
This district-wide initiative is being funded jointly by the District, the Foundation and the PTSA.  This grant will cover the costs of books, supplies, and speakers involved in a K-12 community read/service project.  Students will read Three Cups of Tea, by Greg Mortenson, (available in a young adult version and a picture book version) and participate in a community service program, Pennies for Peace. The program will connect to various elements of the curriculum throughout the academic year and will address issues related to intercultural understanding, problem solving and conflict resolution.

National Council of Teachers of English Conference $3,704
   
This grant was approved and will be paid for by the  Koide fund (a fund established to support teacher training and development).  The grant funds teachers from each of our  schools to attend the annual NCTE conference.

SPRINGHURST GRANT SUMMARIES

Fourth Grade Clearwater Sail    $1,200
   
This grant will help to pay for the continuation of the annual Clearwater sail for the Fourth grade at Springhurst.  Students learn about the Hudson River from both scientific and historic perspectives, learn about navigation and get to help sail this classic sloop.

English Language Learners Field Trip to Muscoot Farm $498
   
Springhurst English Language Learners will be exposed to the culturally enriching experience of visiting a working farm and will provide exciting material for further language and writing development.

Springhurst Annual Harvest Soup Day $993
Grade Levels:  K-5  
   
This grant provides the materials necessary for the outdoor garden and expands the number of beds available for increased participation of all students.  Students will grow food from soil prep and seed planting through the harvest.  Students will learn about the interconnectedness of all living things on earth while simultaneously studying concepts related to nutrition, biology, ecology and life cycles.

Field Trip to Carnegie Hall $1,681
   
All third graders will participate in a music program that culminates in their playing the recorder in an hour long concert at Carnegie Hall with a professional orchestra.  All students will receive a CD, a curriculum guide and a recorder.

MIDDLE SCHOOL GRANT SUMMARIES

Tech Update for MS Scantek Technology Lab   $6,337
   
This grant will fund the much-needed upgrade of the MS technology lab and will affect all students in all grades of the Middle School.  Updated technology, new curriculum modules for Robotics and Automation and for Automotive Technology, and an electronic student response system that allows for more individualized instruction will be funded by this grant.

HIGH SCHOOL GRANT SUMMARIES

Columbia University's Scholastic Press Conference $504
   
This grant funded The Eagle Echo and Orpheus advisors and 10 student members to attend the Columbia University School of Journalism's fall publishing conference. Students were able to attend workshops for newspaper, yearbook, and magazine publishing.
